SIENA HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY
AT MONROE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE
BACHELOR OF APPLIED SCIENCE DEGREE
(INVERTED MAJOR)

The Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) is a career-oriented degree program structured on the “inverted major” concept, which builds an individually designed academic degree program around an approved technical, allied health, or occupational “major” a student has already completed.  It is designed for students with allied health, trade/technical or vocational training and experience, and graduates of two-year occupational programs not offered by Siena Heights University.  Students receive no additional training in the major from Siena Heights University; instead, they complete their Siena Heights University degrees by taking general liberal arts classes and other course work appropriate to their prior learning and future goals.

The applied science degree is appropriate for inverted majors in many areas including:

ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONS

For professionals in such fields as nursing; diagnostic medical sonography; EEG; nuclear medicine; medical laboratory, or radiologic technology; radiation or respiratory therapy; dental hygiene; graduates of specified programs from the Health Enrichment Center; and other allied health professions.

TRADE , INDUSTRIAL, and OCCUPATIONAL PROFESSIONS

For persons trained in industrial areas such as computer information systems technology; design engineering technology; drafting design technology; electronic engineering technology; mechanical engineering technology, or electrical, industrial or manufacturing technology; and for graduates of approved occupational programs such as culinary arts, nuclear power technology, hospitality management, paralegal studies, corrections/law enforcement, fire science technology, human services, office systems administration, and many other associate degree programs.

RADIO AND TELEVISION BROADCASTING OR ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY

For graduates of the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts or community college associate programs in communications, who want to enhance their communications background in Journalism with the breadth of a liberal arts degree.

Students must also fulfill general education requirements, including a philosophy or religious studies course, GEN 301- The Adult as Learner, and GEN 401-Senior Seminar taken with Siena Heights University.  In addition, students must demonstrate proficiency in mathematics and writing, and maintain a 2.0 grade point average for all classes taken with Siena Heights.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Prospective students must:

·        Submit an application for admission.

·        Request official transcripts from high school and all post-secondary institutions attended.

·        Have completed an appropriate major of 30-40 semester hours from an approved technical school or have earned an associate of applied science degree in an appropriate major area.  In the health field, proof of registry or licensure and verification of work experience may be required.  In the trade and industrial areas, each student may be required to pass a nationally recognized test in his/her field.
