- March 14 through May 1, 2008

“The purpose of The Big Read, like the purpose of literature itself, is pleasure. Not necessarily an easy pleasure, but a deliciously rich and complex one. A great book combines enlightenment with enchantment. It awakens our imagination and enlarges our humanity. It can even offer harrowing insights that somehow console and comfort us.”

Dana Gioia
Chairman, National Endowment for the Arts

The Big Read Monroe provides citizens in Monroe County with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book, To Kill a Mockingbird. The program is designed to revitalize the role of literature in the nation's popular culture, and to bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of all citizens.

The Foundation at Monroe County Community College is one of 127 organizations nation-wide selected to participate in The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts and Institute of Library and Museum Services in partnership with Arts Midwest.
