Read With Us – March 18 through April 21, 2007 – and rediscover the joy of literature!
“The purpose of The Big Read, like the purpose of literature itself, is pleasure. Not necessarily an easy pleasure, but a deliciously rich and complex one. A great book combines enlightenment with enchantment. It awakens our imagination and enlarges our humanity. It can even offer harrowing insights that somehow console and comfort us.”
Dana Gioia
Chairman, National Endowment for the Arts
The Big Read Monroe provides citizens in Monroe County with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book, Fahrenheit 451. The program is designed to revitalize the role of literature in the nation's popular culture, and to bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of all citizens.
