   Poetry Contest & Reading

The Big Read Poetry Contest

Guidelines

Poets are invited to enter works inspired by the themes of To Kill a Mockingbird as part of the county-wide Big Read Program.

Among the possible themes are prejudice, racial injustice, coming of age, life in a small town and class division.

Submission Guidelines

  • Writers may submit up to three poems.
  • Each poem is limited to two pages in length.
  • Four copies of each poem should be submitted with a single cover sheet, including name, address, telephone and e-mail. 
  • No names should appear on the poems.
  • Poems must arrive no later than Thursday, April 17 at:

Judging Criteria
Poems will be judged on relevance to the book and overall form and content. A panel of area writers will determine the award winners. Prizes will be awarded for the top three poems.

Public Reading
All participants are invited to read their poems at a public reading in the Atrium of the La-Z-Boy Center at Monroe County Community College on Friday, April 25 at 5:30 p.m.

Awards
Awards will be presented at the conclusion of the reading.
