The Computer Information Systems area of the Business Division at MCCC offers associate degrees in accounting, app development, computer science, cybersecurity and information assurance, office professional, PC support technician and system administration specialist. Certificates are offered in app development, PC support technician and system administration specialist.

CIS: Accounting/CIS

Curriculum/Degree Requiements

The associate of applied science degree with specialization in accounting/CIS has a dual focus in combining accounting and computer courses. Students completing this program of study will have entry-level skills in both career areas

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of all degree requirements, graduates of this program should be able to:

  • Develop the communication, teamwork, and leadership skills necessary to function productively and professionally.
  • Understand the importance of life-long learning, and be prepared to learn and understand new technological developments in their field. 
  • Perform financial accounting functions using proper format and procedure based on GAAP.     
  • Perform managerial accounting functions using proper format and procedure.      
  • Prepare, analyze, and interpret financial statements and reports for service, merchandising and manufacturing companies.    
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of taxation.

CIS: App Development

The associate of applied science degree with specialization in app development is designed to train students in Web and mobile app development.

This certificate program focuses on Web and mobile app development.

CIS: Cybersecurity and Information Assurance

Curriculuml/Degree Requirements

The associate of applied science degree in computer information systems with a program designation of cybersecurity and information assurance is designed to provide an opportunity for students to acquire the foundational skills needed for an entry-level position supporting corporate security operations. The term “information assurance” encompasses the scientific, technical and management disciplines required to ensure computer and network security.

Use, install, configure, manage, troubleshoot and maintain a server operating system.

CIS: Office Professional

Curriculum/Degree Requirements

The associate of applied science degree with specialization as a computer information systems office professional is designed to provide comprehensive preparation for office employment. The curriculum emphasizes communication skills as well as office applications software usage. Graduates of this program will be prepared for entry-level employment in corporate offices, law firms, medical offices, the hospitality industry, educational administrative offices, and administrative departments of state or local governments.

Basic keyboarding abilities and proper “touch typing” skills are required to be successful in these programs.

Program Outcomes

1. Demonstrate an understanding of basic bookkeeping and rudimentary accounting principles as needed by an office professional.
2. Perform accounting functions and applications in both a “manual” and a computerized environment.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of essential structures of a business and the basic business principles that might guide a business operation.

6. Use word processing software to correctly edit, format, proofread and complete business documents.
7. Use word processing software to create complex documents containing graphics and tables with minimal direction.

9. Conceptualize and create a variety of complex desktop publishing documents using standard graphic design software.

In addition to the associate degree with the Computer Information Systems Office Professional designation, Monroe County Community College offers a certificate program in computer information systems office specialist. The college recognizes that many employers place value on a certificate which authenticates specialized preparation. Courses taken under the certificate programs are applicable to the associate degree. Those who complete this certificate program will typically be prepared for entry- level employment as administrative coordinators, receptionists, data entry specialists, administrative specialists, executive administrative assistants, office administrators, customer support specialists and office managers.

The CIS office specialist certificate will help prepare a student to sit for MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) certification tests. Upon successful completion of MOS certifications, specialist positions may be available in IT business applications, office support, office services, IT field technician services and customer service. This certificate program focuses on knowledge and skills that are essential for today’s computer technicians.

  • Trouble-shoot and fix computers and their peripherals along with their operating systems that are used in today’s businesses.

CIS: System Administration Specialist

Curriculum/Degree Requirements

The associate of applied science degree with specialization as a system administration specialist is designed to train students in LAN, Windows Server networking, hardware maintenance, data communication concepts, various PC operating systems and administration fundamentals.

Certificate Requirements

This certificate program focuses on knowledge and skills that are essential for those specializing in network software.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of all degree requirements, graduates of this program should be able to:

Use and configure essential office applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software. Understand the evolution of technology and its basic concepts.

Use, install, configure, manage, troubleshoot and maintain a server operating system.

Professional Practices
Plan for the future and design a solution based on user requirements. Explain business continuity, back up and disaster recovery. Understand troubleshooting and quality consumer support.

CIS Transfer Programs 

The Business Division Computer Information Systems (CIS) area currently has one 2+2 transfer degree program with the University of Michigan at Dearborn and two 2+2 transfer degree programs with Eastern Michigan University. In addition, we have one 3+1 transfer degree program with Siena Heights University.

The 2+2 transfer degree program means you complete one of the specified associate of applied science CIS degree programs at MCCC and then you can transfer seamlessly to one of the specified four-year universities to earn a bachelor of science in computer and information systems, a bachelor of science in computer engineering or a bachelor of business administration in computer information systems.

The 3+1 transfer degree program with Siena Heights University means you complete any of the associate of applied science in computer information systems degree programs and take an additional 30 hours of MCCC CIS and/or other MCCC courses at MCCC’s tuition rate and then transfer seamlessly to Siena Heights University to take the final 30 hours of Siena Heights courses (right here on the MCCC campus) to earn a bachelor of applied science degree.
