Nonverbal Communication: SPCH 255 - Outline of Instruction

This course studies the use and meaning of the language of body movement and gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, clothing, space, etc., as related to the communication process in an attempt to correlate these nonverbal behaviors with underlying conscious/unconscious feelings, attitudes, emotions, mood and state. Students will be provided with the knowledge of learning and using nonverbal communication in interpersonal relations. Applications to education, mental health, business, government, religion, speech and drama will also be covered. Effects of communication themes, techniques, symbols and formats on the thoughts, attitudes and personality of others.

 

General Information

The Humanities/Social Sciences Division is the largest academic division at Monroe County Community College. The Humanities department offers courses in art, English composition, literature, drama, music, various foreign languages, and speech. The Social Sciences Department offers courses in anthropology, history, political science, and sociology.

Academic scholarships are available in art, band, choir, drama, and journalism. Many of our programs - - band, choir, and drama - - have significant community involvement.
