POLSC 154 - Introduction to Law Enforcement                                                           Dr. Joanna Briganti

Mini Position Research Paper

Topics and Instructions

General Instructions:

The paper has three main objectives-

1.  Select one of the topics listed below and write a clear argument about that topic.

2.  Support your argument by citing solid research.

3.  Write the paper according to the MLA format or other parenthetical reference style, such as APA.

Additional requirements for the paper include:

·        Three-four pages, double-spaced; 10 or 12 point font, Times New Roman or Courier font.

·        Cover page with your name and course section number

·        Please staple - no plastic report covers

·        Set margins at one-inch on all borders.

·        List your references in a bibliography (works cited page), arranged in alphabetical order.

·        You must use and cite at least three credentialed resources.

 Topic Choices:

  1. Patrol officers and other police officials should have expanded powers. The Miranda rule and the exclusionary rule have tied the hands of the law too long. With our current national crime rates, police should be able to stop, interrogate, search, subdue, and detain suspects more freely.
  2. The death penalty should be abolished in the United States. OR  The death penalty is effective punishment.
  3. All law abiding citizens should have the right to carry a concealed weapon.  OR  Allowing citizens in general to carry concealed weapons is wrong and dangerous.
  4. Because of terrorist threats, some privacy rights and freedoms should be relinquished by U.S. citizens.  Police should be able to use extensive surveillance to watch public places.  Security/police officials should be able question and frisk any person at any time if they believe that person poses a security risk.
  5. Convicted criminals can be rehabilitated and re-enter society as law-abiding citizens. Studies have shown that various prison and post-prison programs have been effective in reforming incarcerated individuals and ex-convicts.

Final research papers are due at the beginning of class on the date noted on the syllabus. NO LATE PAPERS ARE ACCEPTED FOR POINTS – EVER.

Please make use of the college Writing Fellows program and Writing Lab if you need assistance.  I will also make myself available to assist you if you need help.

 Group Presentations:

Every student will write an individual paper.  In addition, on the date assigned, students will be asked to present a few of their research findings to the class along with other students who researched the same topic.  These presentations will be organized but informal.  Your instructor will provide you with additional instructions prior to your presentation.

Remember: It is important that you make a copy of your paper before you turn it in.

Note:  Plagiarism of any kind will result in serious consequences for the student.  See the MCCC college catalogue/schedule for policies regarding academic dishonesty.
