BUSAD 151 Introduction to Business - Syllabus

Textbook (bring to class)

Business Essentials Second Edition. Ronald J. Ebert & Ricky W. Griffin

Methodology

Classes are primarily lecture, discussions and in-class activities, with some variation from session to session. Small group discussions, exercises, and student activities will be facilitated, and various media will be utilized to involve students and maintain interest. (Caution: you will be busy in this class.)

Course Requirements

Grades are for sale. Business is about the process of producing a valuable good or service and exchanging it for another valuable good or service.

In this class you will earn BUSAD BUCKS ("$") based on the pay scale presented below. The more you earn the more you will have for the purchase of your grade. All assignments are optional based on the grade you hope to earn. At the end of the semester you will purchase your grade with the "$" you earned.

1. Attendance/Participation/In-Class Learning Activities and Internet Exercises:

Attendance is absolutely required. The exercises and activities conducted in class are graded (pay "$") and are an integral part of the learning process. Students are responsible for all material covered during class sessions including class activities. Note taking is very strongly recommended. Notebook computers are welcome, provided they are self-powered and your keypad is very quiet.

Attendance and completion of course assignments are also necessary to earn enough "BUSAD BUCKS" for a higher grade. This course does not have a "paid absence" benefit. If you are absent for any reason, you will not be paid for the in-class exercises.

2. Text and Supplemental Readings:

Students are expected to read the assigned material before each class session and be prepared to participate in discussions or activities related to the text readings. Additional readings may be assigned during the semester.

3. In-class Essays/Short Stories

The college participates in Writing Across the Curriculum. In an effort to measure your critical thinking through writing, two writing assignments will be completed during class and then discussed. Each of these assignments will offer you the choice between a report-type essay, or a fictional story to complete the writing assignment. Because collaboration can be a useful business skill, under certain circumstances you may be allowed to work in pairs.

4. "In the News"

Students may earn additional "$" by signing up to bring in a newspaper or newsmagazine article on the topic scheduled for a particular class period. If you choose to bring in an article, you will be asked to verbally summarize the article for the class, so the group may discuss the issues.

5. Exams:

There will be four exams of equal weight administered in class. The exams will consist of some combination of multiple choice and true/false questions. Questions for exams and quizzes are drawn from all course resources: textbook, lecture, discussions, activities, handouts, movies, etc.

As a policy, NO MAKE-UP EXAMS OR QUIZZES ARE GIVEN (proven emergencies considered on a case-by-case basis). In the event that a make-up exam is allowed because of an emergency, that exam will be different from the quiz or exam administered in class.

All assignments and tests will be kept by the instructor. You will be given the opportunity to examine your grade and any comments written on the assignments. You should make yourself a copy of all completed assignments before you turn them in.

6. Insurance: Analyses:

Two case analyses are assigned during the semester. Each case analysis will be in essay form, approximately one - two double spaced, typed pages in length. These are your "insurance" assignments. Purchasing insurance is a way to manage risk. We will discuss this concept during the course. If your grades on the case analyses are high you will receive more "$" for the assignments. Then, at the end of the course you may substitute the combined dollar amount for your two case analyses in lieu of one of your test grades. Of course, you may choose not to complete the insurance assignments at all.

GRADE PRICE LIST

The amount of BUSAD BUCKS paid for each assignment is noted on the attached course schedule. The grade you may "purchase" at the end of the course will be calculated from the total BUSAD BUCKS you have earned.
