Group Presentations

What

You will be working in a small group to develop and present either Concept Maps or Table Top presentations. Groups will be assigned well in advance.

When

Your group presentation will occur on the date the disorder is due to be discussed during class.

How

All group members are expected to provide input and to participate in the presentations. Keep in mind that you may wish to include your presentation handouts in your portfolios, so you may want them to look as professional as possible.

There will be 8 groups: 4 will work on Concept Maps (CM) and 4 will work on Table Top Presentations (TT). Specific information for each group is outlined below.

Concept Map Groups

You will develop 2 concept maps for presentation. Half of your group will focus on the pathophysiology of the disorder and symptoms, and the other half should focus on nursing diagnoses and interventions. These should be large enough for clear overhead projector use. I will provide you with overhead transparencies for use during your class presentation time. All group members will participate in the actual presentation.

Table Top Groups

The object is to help your fellow students remember key symptoms, components of, and/or pathophysiology of a disorder. As a group you will present to the class a "picture" of the particular condition. You may use a variety of methods: a group developed "rap" song or other musical idea, a poem or story, common household items, a three dimensional design, or a short play with characters dressed up to represent symptoms or pathologic processes. Keep it short and to the point. It is not necessary to go into a lot of detail, because I will be covering the information also. As an example, if I were doing PIH, I might use different diameter tubings with a colored fluid in them to illustrate the vasoconstriction and hemoconcentation that occurs in the disorder.

Topics

CM Group 1 Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH)
TT Group 2 Dystocia: Hypertonic and Hypotonic Contraction Patterns
TT Group 3 Hemorrhage: Placenta previa
TT Group 4 Hemorrhage: Abruptio Placentae
CM Group 5 Hemorrhage: Hydatidiform Mole
TT Group 6 Isoimmune Disease (Rh incompatibility)
CM Group 7 Cardiac
CM Group 8 Preterm Labor

Post Partum Home Visit

Requirements:

You will make a home visit at a mutually agreeable time with one of the postpartum families that you have cared for during your OB rotation. You should plan to make the home visit within 1-2 weeks following their hospital discharge.

Objectives:

Identify the new mother's most common concerns in the early weeks at home.
Recognize the nurse's role in addressing those concerns.
Assess the mother's and infant's health status.
Make referrals when appropriate.

Assignment:

Following your home visit, write a short, one page summary of your visit, addressing the above objectives. Hand this in to your clinical instructor.

Due Date:

Summary is due the week following your home visit to your clinical instructor.
