Steps to Success for Students with Disabilities at MCCC
Throughout high school 1. Complete a rigorous high school program. Take as many college-level classes in a mainstreamed environment as possible, especially English, math, science and computers.
Throughout high school 2. Maintain current documentation of your disability. Keep a copy at home for easy access.
3-6 months before entry 3. complete a MCCC application for admission and send it to the Admissions Office - NOT the Learning Assistance Lab.
While in high school 4. Register with Michigan Department of Career Development/Rehabilitation Services before graduation from high school, if possible.
3-6 months before entry 5. Call the Admissions Office (384-4104 or 1-877-Yes-MCCC) and arrange for a tour of the campus. Be certain to include the Learning Assistance Lab (C-218) so you will know where to come for disability services or for academic assistance.
2-3 months before entry 6. Make arrangements for taking Compass (a placement test measuring your skills in writing, reading and math) If you will be requesting accommodations other than extended time, please contact the Learning Assistance Lab (384-4167) to arrange an appointment with a disabilities counselor to discuss your needs. PLEASE NOTE: please give one weeks notice for accommodation requests.
1 week after taking placement test 7. Please make another appointment with an LAL Disabilities Counselor to discuss your test results, determine a semester schedule and arrange for any classroom accommodations.
3-6 months before entry 8. Apply for financial aid. If you desire, our financial aid staff can assist you and your family to complete the paperwork. (M.R.S. Also requires the completion of the same forms but does not necessarily require one to be eligible.)
As early as college scheduling allows 9. During your designated scheduling time, register for your classes using the telephone (SMART) system or WebPAL (website) or by bringing the form to Registration in the Administration building.
The day before the semester begins 10. Plan to attend "First Steps for College Success". This is a free, full-day workshop that will provide techniques to help you get your college career off to a good start. Watch you mail for more information.
The day before the semester begins 11. Plan to attend the "Disabilities Workshop" which is an hour long presentation for you, your parents, and/or significant other to learn about your rights and responsibilities under the Americans With Disabilities Act. During the program you will also be acquainted with the process for securing accommodations and strategies for succeeding with a disability.
After your college schedule is determined 12. If you have a job, plan to meet with your employer to talk about a workable schedule. Consider limiting your work hours significantly during the first semester or two at college. Your LAL counselor can help you with this issue.
2-3 months before entry 13. Check with your medical insurance carrier about your coverage after age 18. (Some carriers require full-time status while others maintain coverage for less tan full-time status). Let the LAL counselor know if this is an issue.
1-2 months before entry 14. When applicable, determine a reliable child care/transportation arrangement, including a back-up plan.
Preferably 2-3 weeks before classes begin 15. Purchase ALL required books and recommended supplemental guides as early as they become available so that you can get a head start by acquainting yourself with the text. Consider purchasing new books rather than used ones so that you can implement your preferred methods of textbook marking and not be distracted or confused by the previous owners marks.
On-going 16. Recognize your need for additional support services, such as tutoring and counseling. The Learning Assistance Lab offers these services on a first-come first serve basis so they will not necessarily be scheduled around the hours that you have free. You may need to make additional trips to campus for these services.
On-going 17. Maintain open communication with your instructors regarding your progress.
