FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: ZERO-INCREASE MILLAGE RENEWAL

Below are answers to frequently asked questions about MCCC's Zero-increase Millage Renewal for Maintenance and Improvement.

If you have a question you think should be included in the Frequently Asked Questions section, please let us know by emailing Joe Verkennes, director of marketing and communications, at jverkennes@monroeccc.edu

In 2016, Monroe County Voters approved a five-year Maintenance and Improvement Millage so that MCCC could implement Phase 1 of a plan to make critical facility and technology maintenance and improvement needs.

On Nov. 3, MCCC is requesting a zero-increase renewal of that millage for five more years to implement Phase 2 of projects to maintain and improve MCCC’s Main Campus in Monroe and Whitman Center in Temperance.

These improvements are vital for MCCC to remain competitive and ensure an excellent environment for student services and learning, safety, accessibility and efficiency.

This is a renewal, not a new tax. For a home with a value of $100,000, the cost of the Zero-increase Millage Renewal for Maintenance and Improvement will continue to be less than $4 per month.

  • Updating the Student Services and Learning Environments. Maintain and improve the student services and learning environments, including collaboration spaces, classrooms, labs, offices, dining areas, the Bookstore and more.
  • Safety. Enhance and improve safety and security across campus, including completion of a campus-wide, interior and exterior door access control system project, new lighting systems both inside and outside, and installation of fire suppression equipment throughout all buildings.
  • Accessibility. Bring all facilities up to standards for people with disabilities and other special needs, including installation of accessible restrooms and entryways, proper elevator access and accessible door hardware.
  • Efficiency. Complete the upgrade of the IT network infrastructure, including the wireless network, fiber optic network and uninterruptible power supply; improve cellular connectivity; implement remote document management, and connect remaining buildings to the existing geothermal HVAC system.
  • Deferred Maintenance. Ensure and maintain the quality of facilities through the repair/replacement of doors, window, roofs, parking lots and other outdated infrastructure.

Yes. The Millage Projects by Facility/Area section of this website provides not only a comprehensive lists of Phase 2 projects funded by the millage renewal, but also a full list of projects funded by the initial 5-year Maintenance and Replacement Millage.

The Monroe County Community College Board of Trustees determined that, in its exercise of its statutory duties and in order to best serve the needs of the college and the community, a renewal of .85 mill ($0.85 per $1,000 of taxable value) be levied by MCCC for a period of 5 years – beginning in 2021 and ending in 2025 – “to be used for renovation and upgrade of the college’s infrastructure and facilities which will include safety projects, accessibility projects, technology projects, learning environment projects and maintenance projects.”

If approved, this millage renewal would raise an estimated $5.47 million for MCCC in 2021 (This is a renewal of millage which will expire with the 2020 levy.).
