Board Freezes Fall Semester Tuition Rate for In-District Students

MONROE, Mich. – At its regular meeting last night, the Monroe County Community College Board of Trustees approved a freeze on the tuition rate for students who are Monroe County residents by a vote of 6-0.

The Fall Semester tuition rate for those students will remain at $107 per billable contact hour.

“The Monroe County Community College Board of Trustees is committed to affordable, quality higher education in Monroe County, and attracting and retaining students is a top priority,” said Board Chair Lynette Dowler.  “With that, we unanimously voted for a ‘zero increase’ in resident tuition for Fall Semester 2017.  We want MCCC to be the college of choice for county residents.”

This is the first time since 2009 that the Fall Semester tuition rate has not increased.  That year, the college switched from billing by credit hour to billing by contact hour, which reflects the amount of time that a student spends in direct contact with an instructor, lab equipment or other instructional setting.

The Board approved slight Fall Semester tuition rate increases for students who are not residents of Monroe County. Students living in Michigan, but outside Monroe County, will pay $190 per billable contact hour, up $4.  Students from out of state and international students will pay $211.50 per hour, up $3.50.

The Board also approved a $5 increase to the registration fee that is applied once a semester.  That fee will be $40 for Fall Semester.

Dowler, Vice Chair Mary Kay Thayer, Secretary Aaron Mason, and trustees Dr. James DeVries, Steven Hill and Marjorie Kreps all voted in favor of the tuition rate motion.  Trustee William T. Bruck was absent.
