MCCC AWARDS THE DR. FLORENCE AMES
FINE ART SCHOLARSHIP

MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community College has awarded the Dr. Florence Ames Fine Art Scholarship to Chelsea A. Kubesh of Brownstown Township.  The $1,000 award can be used for tuition, fees and books.

To be eligible for the Ames scholarship, a student must be a full-time, second-year art major and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

The scholarship was established to honor Dr. Florence Ames, a pediatrician and Monroe’s first female doctor, who was an avid collector of pottery and Victorian glass.  Her collection was donated to the college in 1968 and was on display in the college’s Campbell Learning Resources Center until 1999.

In order to honor Ames and the significant donations she made to the Monroe Community, MCCC decided to sell the collection at the 2002 Antiques in April event to establish the scholarship.
