JOE’S BOXING CLUB TO PRESENT
AMATUER BOXING EXHIBITION AT MCCC

MONROE, Mich. – Get ready for a night of jabs, uppercuts and hooks, as Joe’s Boxing Club will present a night of amateur boxing at Monroe County Community College on Saturday, February 9.

“Boxing 101” will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium of MCCC’s Welch Health Education Building, which is located at 1555 S. Raisinville Rd. in Monroe.

“It’s fight night at the college,” said Todd Riggs, president of the Monroe-based, amateur boxing club founded by legendary trainer Joe Giarmo.

“Boxing 101” will feature bouts by male and female boxers from Joe’s Boxing Club – the 2006 and 2007 Toledo Golden Gloves Junior Champions and All Around Team Champions, 2007 Toledo Golden Gloves Open Team Champions and second place finishers in the Silver Gloves State Boxing Tournament.  In addition, a number of guest boxing clubs will participate, including Kronk Boxing Club, Azteca Boxing Club, Glass City Boxing Gym, East Side Boxing, Casa De Boxeo and Fremont Wreckers Boxing Club.

Bobb Vergiels, public address announcer for the Detroit Tigers and MCCC alum, will serve as special guest ring announcer.

Joe’s Boxing Club is in its 65th year of teaching boys and girls the sport of boxing at no cost, a tradition started by Giarmo, who, at age 91, still attends many practices.  According to Riggs, these young athletes learn much more than boxing – they learn respect for themselves and others, honesty, good sportsmanship and confidence.

A portion of the proceeds from “Boxing 101” will go toward the establishment of an MCCC scholarship by Joe’s Boxing Club.

Admission is $10 at the door, and tickets will also be available in advance at Power House Gym, home of Joe’s Boxing Club, located at 975 S. Monroe St. in Monroe.  All seating is general admission.  Doors open at 6 p.m.
