MCCC TO HOST HEALTH ODYSSEY 2007
MONROE, Mich. – Monroe County Community College’s annual fitness day, Health Odyssey, featuring guest speakers and health information and screenings, will be held Tuesday, October 23, 2007, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on MCCC’s Main Campus.
The event is free and open to the public.
Health information and screenings will be held in the Gerald Welch Health Education Building, as well as presentations by several speakers.
Free screenings will include pulmonary function, blood pressure, height and weight, chiropractic, asthma, and two new tests this year: a foot exam and glaucoma testing. In addition, information will be available on diabetes, nutrition and cancer.
Also new this year will be free massages by a massage therapist.
A number of other tests will be available for a fee. These tests require a four-hour fast:
- Comprehensive blood panel: $40
- H.Pylori blood test, which screens for ulcers, gastritis and other stomach ailments. Cost: $15
- Prostate specific antigen blood test for men: $25
- Cancer antigen for women, which may detect reproductive problems and ovarian cancer: $25
- Cardiac enzyme test, which can help diagnose a variety of cardiovascular problems: $25
- Colorectal screening kits: $8

- 9 a.m.: Dr. Karen Brooke, MCCC professor of nursing, “Coping With Stress,” Room 159
- 10 a.m.: MCCC’s Chef Kevin Thomas, “Health Cooking Tips,” Room 159
- 11 a.m.: Mark Bergmooser, MCCC assistant professor of speech, journalism and tae kwon do, “The Martial Arts,” Room H-139
The keynote speaker will be Linda Lauer, an area licensed physical therapist with 20 years of experience in the field. Lauer, who specializes in pain management which emphasizes holistic health, will present “How to Maintain a State of Wellness.”
She will discuss the latest information on holistic health and how it can help people to a healthier and happier life. According to Lauer, treatment should be on all aspects of health, not just the symptoms of an ailment, disease or injury.
The presentation will be held in the Audrey M. Warrick Student Services/Administration Building, Room 173 A, B and C at 12:30 p.m. People are encouraged to bring their lunches to the presentation.
