CHANCELLOR TO ADDRESS MCCC EMPLOYEES
Dr. Daniel Little to Discuss MCCC’s Role in UM-D’s
Vision to Meet Challenges Facing S.E. Mich. and Beyond
MONROE, Mich. – University of Michigan-Dearborn Chancellor Dr. Daniel Little will address the Monroe County Community College faculty and staff on Wednesday about the role MCCC plays in UM-D’s strategic vision to meet challenges facing southeast Michigan, the state and the industrial Midwest.
Dr. Little will be the guest speaker at MCCC’s annual Welcome Back Breakfast for all full- and part-time employees, which runs from 7:30 to 10 a.m. in the Warrick Student Services/Administration Building.
UM-D’s strategic vision for the next decade is entitled Making the Metropolitan Difference and focuses on the new and difficult challenges of the early 21st century, including the loss of industrial jobs, persistent racial differences, heavily impacted environments, public fiscal challenges, challenged schools and limited regional cooperation.
The vision is made up of four central strategies: increasing enrollment, enhancing student engagement, deepening academic excellence and achieving metropolitan impact. These strategies are designed to culminate in five major areas of impact:
- The future of manufacturing
- Pre-K-12 education
- Racial and ethnic divisions
- Urban and environmental problems
- Local and regional leadership
Dr. Little holds a doctorate in philosophy from Harvard University, as well as a bachelor of arts in philosophy and a bachelor of science in mathematics from the University of Illinois.
He has written numerous books, including “The Scientific Marx,” “ Understanding Peasant China,” “Varieties of Social Explanation,” “On the Reliability of Economic Models,”
“Microfoundations, Method, and Causation”and his most recent work, “The Paradox of Wealth and Poverty,” which is a discussion of the ethical issues raised by the economic development in third-world countries.
Dr. Little serves on the boards of New Detroit, Detroit Urban League, The Future of Minority Studies Research Project, and the Council of Asian and Pacific Americans. He is also the chair of the Macrohistorical Dynamics Network of the Social Science History Association.
