COMPASS Placement Testing |
What is COMPASS? The COMPASS program is a series of basic skills assessments in English, Reading, and Math developed by American College Testing (ACT) and completed on a computer. The tests that you are about to take are part of a system named COMPASS (Computer-Adaptive Placement Assessment and Support System) which is used to place you in classes that match your abilities. Who needs to take COMPASS? COMPASS is required of all new students and all transfer students who have earned fewer than 12 semester hours from another college or have not met the ACT criteria. Students with ACT scores of 18 or higher in English, reading and math, or have taken ASSET do not need to take COMPASS. What scores must I earn to pass? COMPASS is not a pass/fail test. It was developed to assist in college academic advising and course selection. Compass scores will indicate where your academic strengths and needs lie in relation to college-level work. Course recommendations and requirements are based on COMPASS results. Where and when can I take COMPASS? COMPASS is offered in two locations at various times. On the main campus it is offered in the Regional Computer Technology Center (RCTC) in W-157. Call (734) 384-4144 for a schedule of testing times. At the Whitman Center it is offered in the Business Learning Lab (BLL) in Room 1. Call (734) 847-0559 for a schedule of testing times. Tips for taking COMPASS Relax! The COMPASS tests are designed to help you succeed in college. There is no way to study for COMPASS. The goal of the assessment is to find out where you are now, academically. The tests are not timed and questions will increase in difficulty depending on your skill level. Additional information and sample questions are available through the ACT website: http://www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html.
