Computer Skills Competency Assessment

BASIC DESCRIPTION OF WHAT THIS ASSESSMENT IS…

  • An assessment of basic computer skills and competency including:
    • general knowledge of concepts and terms
      • for example: hardware, software, program, files, data, storage, etc.
    • file management
      • for example: open a file, close a file, move a file, etc.
    • document processing
      • for example: using a word processor, bolding, centering, cutting, pasting, etc.
    • e-mail & Internet
      • for example: sending messages, receiving messages, searching, etc.
  • A method for meeting the Associate Degree General Education requirement called “Computer Skills.”
  • A computerized assessment consisting of both objective questions and a skills/application demonstration section.

THIS ASSESSMENT IS NOT…

  • A “placement” exam
  • A method to earn academic credit
    (no academic credit is awarded upon completion of this assessment)
  • A way to meet any pre-requisite for advanced computer courses

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER ATTEMPTING THIS ASSESSMENT:

  • Someone planning to earn an Associate Degree from MCCC.
  • Someone whose chosen degree program does not include CIS 130, MDTC 160, WPR 102 or WPR 110 as either required or elective courses that will be selected during your program coursework.
  • Someone with basic computer knowledge and good computer skills developed through experience or previous coursework.

WHEN DOES THIS NEED TO BE COMPLETED:

  • Simply put, this General Education skill requirement must be satisfied at any time prior to graduation with an Associate Degree.

HOW DO I PROCEED TO TAKE THIS ASSESSMENT?

  • Pick-up an application form from your academic advisor, a counselor in the Admissions Office or in the Regional Computer Technology Center (W-157) or the Business Learning Lab (Whitman Center).
  • Meet with your academic advisor or guidance counselor to discuss the assessment and your skills which might allow you to be successful on this assessment. Have that person sign your application.
  • The assessment is administered in the RCTC, West Technology Building room 157. Prior to the date you wish to take the assessment, call and inform the RCTC Lab Technicians that you wish to take the “Computer Skills Assessment.” He or she will set-up an appointment for you to take the assessment.  734-384-4144
  • When you arrive to take the assessment, you will need to show a picture ID and sign-in. Please allow at least 90 minutes to complete this assessment. Don’t bring any books or materials with you.
  • Upon achieving a satisfactory score on the “concepts” portion of the assessment, you will then purchase the appropriate SAM Challenge Keycode from the College Bookstore, cost = $14.00 (This keycode will only be good for one attempt.)
  • When completed, you will submit your scores to the Lab Technician and, if you have achieved the minimum score required on both sections of the assessment, he or she will pass along your results to the Registrar’s office for inclusion in your record.

REMEMBER you need to have basic computer knowledge and good computer skills to be successful on this assessment. You may only attempt this assessment once per semester/term (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer).
