Writing is a process of discovering ideas, attitudes, or feelings. The direction of a piece of writing often changes as the writer discovers something new about a topic.

- Stages of writing process overlap. Writer may cycle back through the stages during the course of writing a paper
- Each stage requires making decisions. Every black mark in a finished piece is the result of a decision made by the writer.
- During each stage of writing, the writer evaluates his or her work and either makes changes or proceeds in response to his or her evaluation of what has been done.
