Assistive Technology- The Disability Services Office is located in the Learning Assistance Lab (C-218 on the second floor of the Campbell Learning Resources Center). An elevator is accessible from the south entrance of the building. Cambell Learning Resources Center, Room C218. Monroe County Community College offers a variety of assistive computer software and adaptive equipment.   • Adaptive Seating – A variety of adaptive seating options are available for classroom use.

  • Adjustable Tables – Height can be adjusted manually.

  • Assistive Listening Device – Listen LR-500 FM System - The instructor wears a microphone which allows the student to hear the instructor while blocking out background noise. This unit can be used with or without personal hearing aids. Students may need to meet with their audiologist for personal adjustment. 

  • Dragon Naturally Speaking - Speech recognition software that will transcribe voice dictation. Preprogrammed commands enable users to vocally navigate the desktop, open/create documents, and operate within documents.

  • Epson Scanner/Acrobat Reader – The Epson scanner converts documents to PDF format which can be combined with text-to-speech Adobe Acrobat Reader software. The system uses optical character recognition (OCR) technology to convert scanned documents to text that may be read by the computer.

  • Flipper - A tabletop camera lens that enlarges print or objects onto a screen monitor.

  • Large Screen Monitors – Two desktop computers with 26” monitors are available to assist with students visual impairments in using screen enlargement programs.

  • Livescribe, Smartpen -  Records what you both hear and write. Audio recordings can be synchronized with written notes. When students return to their notes, they can hear the lecture that was recorded at the time the note was written. (available for demonstration and information only)

  • Print Magnifier – Allows for magnification of books, magazines, and class hand-outs. This black and white magnifier has the capability of increasing print up to 10x its original size. There are two units available on campus located in the Campbell Learning Resources Center- Building C: one in the Learning Assistance Lab (LAL), and one in the Library.

  • Simon Scanner – A reading machine that operates by scanning a single page document. Once scanned, reading will begin automatically through a headphone set.

  • Sound Amplification Stethoscope – This equipment is designed to electronically enhance sound. Students pursuing health occupations with mild to moderate hearing loss may benefit from this technology.

  • Window-Eyes - Enables visually impaired students to use the computer to translate information on the screen into synthetic speech. Window-Eyes is compatible with many popular programs such as those from Microsoft, Mozilla, Adobe, and Apple.

  • Bookshare - An individual membership allows any individual with a qualifying print disability to download books. Individuals can have their own individual membership and can also be listed on an organization’s (school; college) membership.

  • Learning Ally – formerly, Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic – A nonprofit organization that provides accessible educational materials to people with visual and learning disabilities.

  • National Library Service (NLS) - Through a national network of cooperating libraries, NLS administers a free library program of Braille and audio materials circulated to eligible borrowers in the United States by postage-free mail through the Library of Congress.

  • Michigan Rehabilitation Services - A state funded agency that provides free services to Michigan residents with disabilities.  Their services may include assistance with education and training leading toward employment and self-sufficiency.  Please speak to a Disability Services Counselor for more information.
