Assistive Technology Monroe County Community College offers a variety of assistive computer software and adaptive equipment. Kurzweil Reader - A combination of scanning and test-to-voice software, Kruzweil 3000 allows users to scan any type of printed material including books, magazines, and the World Wide Web. Users can see the printed material on the screen and hear the test read aloud. The word, phrase, line, sentence, or paragraph being read is highlighted. Kurzweil 3000 retains the document's original type font, format, and illustrations. This software can also be used to proofread documents created by the user. Kurzweil 3000 is useful for people with dyslexia or other reading difficulties. Scan and Read Software - This program allows you to scan printed text and then have it spoken back to you in a synthesized voice or put on to disk. This program features 17 different voices, adjustable voice rates, and will magnify text up to 400%. Clarity Video Magnifier - This magnifier works with a special CCTV camera that projects the contrast and image quality. The magnification ranges from 4x up to 38x. Anything can be magnified including books, overheads, syllabi, and even writing on a blackboard. The magnification is displayed on a 20 inch color monitor with contrast adjustment. Print Magnifier - Allows for magnification of books, magazines, and class hand-outs. This black and white magnifier has the capability of increasing print up to 10x its original size. Assistive Listening Device - Phonic Ear PE 471 FM System Sound Amplification Stethoscope - This equipment is designed to electronically enhance sound transmission. Students pursuing health occupations with mild to moderate hearing loss may benefit from this technology. Adaptive Seating - A variety of adaptive equipment is available for classroom use. Specific needs are based on the limitations of your disability.
