Journeyperson Credential to Degree

Student in electronics labTurn Your Union Journeyperson Credential into a College Degree

You've already completed years of rigorous apprenticeship training, mastered your trade, and earned your journeyperson status. Now, through the Michigan College Credit for Apprenticeships Program (MI-CCAP) initiative, that experience can help you take the next step toward an associate degree.

The MI-CCAP initiative, led by the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA) in partnership with Michigan state agencies and labor organizations, is creating clear pathways that translate registered apprenticeship training into college credit. By recognizing the learning that occurs both on the job and in related technical instruction, colleges can award significant credit toward an associate degree—allowing a journeyperson to complete a degree without starting from scratch.

Why Complete Your Degree?

An associate degree can help you:

  • Advance into supervisory, management, estimating, project management, or training roles.
  • Strengthen your qualifications for future career opportunities.
  • Build skills in leadership, communication, business, and technology.
  • Create a pathway toward a bachelor's degree.
  • Gain formal academic recognition for the knowledge and skills you've already earned through apprenticeship.

Your Apprenticeship Has Value

Michigan colleges participating in the MI-CCAP initiative are developing program maps that show exactly how apprenticeship credits apply toward degree requirements. Depending on your trade and apprenticeship program, you may receive substantial college credit for prior learning, significantly reducing the number of courses needed to earn a degree.

A Smarter Path Forward

The MI-CCAP initiative is built on a simple idea: your apprenticeship education matters. Rather than repeating what you've already learned, degree completion pathways recognize your real-world training and experience, helping you move efficiently toward an associate degree while continuing to build your career.
