A Message from the President

A Message from MCCC President Dr. Kojo A. Quartey:

Swift Action Taken Concerning Negative Statements on Race

June 6, 2020

On June 3, Monroe County Community College officials became aware that negative and offensive statements concerning race had been made via electronic messaging by at least one individual in our college community.

Swift action has been taken in the matter.  However, no specific details on the action can be provided by the college publicly per federal privacy law.

MCCC’s mission is to enrich lives in our community by providing opportunity through student-focused, affordable, quality higher education and other learning experiences.

Our core values are the foundation of our mission.  Two of our core values were severely violated by this situation – and that, we will not tolerate.

The first of the values that were not upheld is diversity/inclusion – we celebrate the individuality and diversity of our students, community, nation and world.  The second is respect.  At MCCC, we practice equity and provide mutual respect to all individuals, even those with different points of view.

Two other core values considered in this matter were student-focus and accessibility.  At MCCC, we make all decisions through the lens of what is best for all of our students, and we are committed to offering ease and safe access to educational opportunities, programs and services.  The action the college has taken in this situation upholds those values.

As I have said in my prior communication, as an institution, we will not tolerate violence or threats of violence or other illegal activity.

In this situation, while protecting the rights of all, Monroe County Community College has taken appropriate action within the boundaries of our mission, values, and policies and procedures.

Dr. Kojo A. Quartey
President
Monroe County Community College
