The One Book, One Community of Monroe County Committee is hosting a book launch event for this spring’s community read selection –“What the Eyes Don’t See: A Story of Crisis, Resistance, and Hope in an American City” by Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha.
The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
“What the Eyes Don’t See” is the story of how Mona Hanna-Attisha, alongside a team of researchers, parents, friends and community leaders, discovered that the children of Flint were being exposed to lead in their tap water – and then exposed that truth to the world. The book has also been selected as the Great Michigan Read book for 2019-2020.
At the event, attendees will be able to learn more about the book and why the committee selected it, as well as gain insight into One Book, One Community of Monroe’s partnership with the Great Michigan Read. Readers guides will be distributed, and attendees will be able to enter a drawing to win a free copy of the book. More than one book will be given away at the event. Judy Murray, reference librarian and book club leader for the Monroe County Library System, will discuss books community members might enjoy reading in addition to “What the Eyes Don’t See.”
One Book, One Community of Monroe County, modeled after a program developed by the American Library Association, promotes the value of reading by recommending a compelling book that links community members in a common conversation through readings, group discussions, programs and other events.
This year’s program will run from March 9 through April 3, 2020.
Founding partners include Monroe County Community College, The Foundation at MCCC, Monroe County Library System and the Monroe News.
