Logan DeBruyne is a 20-year-old Monroe County Community College nursing student who will complete his fourth semester in the fall of 2026.

DeBruyne, who has been a Monroe County resident his entire life, attended Whiteford High School before enrolling at MCCC. He is very close to his family and initially chose to attend MCCC because his relatives are alumni. Eventually, MCCC's affordability and excellent nursing program professors reinforced to him that he had definitely made the right choice of where to pursue his higher education.

Logan DeBruyneDeBruyne did not always know he wanted to be a nurse. He was undecided in his first year but gradually became curious about healthcare and nursing. His family, including his sister, who is a nurse practitioner, encouraged his exploration of healthcare, and he is now near completion of the Associate Degree in Nursing program.

DeBruyne’s experience in the classroom and at clinicals has cultivated his appreciation for the nursing field. He is dedicated to serving people and explains that, as a nurse, he will have a purposeful career.

“People come [into the hospital], and sometimes they’re not in the greatest of conditions," he said. "Physically, mentally, [or] whatever it might be.” To him, it is a gift to have a hand in the community’s healing processs.

Aligned with the impact nurses have on wellness, DeBruyne is passionate about accuracy in medical diagnoses, stating that correctly identifying symptoms is a huge aspect of responsible nursing.

Despite having memorized various bodily processes, diseases and signs, he admits that diagnosing is not always clear-cut, so he is looking forward to honing his diagnostic skills in the upcoming semester.

So far, DeBruyne has performed clinicals at ProMedica Toledo, ProMedica Monroe and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. His coursework and clinical experiences have led him to favor working in medical-heavy units over others.

He plans to obtain his Bachelor of Science in nursing degree online and wants to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist or a nurse practitioner.

DeBruyne believes that anyone can become a nurse if they are dedicated to learning. He has made great friends while in the program, often studying with others to fortify class concepts. His professors are also among his biggest supporters, being kind and helpful in all circumstances.

His best advice for aspiring nursing students at MCCC is to "get engaged, definitely, and be prepared to really study.”
