Free Scholarship Application Workshops Offered in Advance of March 1 Deadline

Students who plan to attend Monroe County Community College in the 2020-21 academic year can apply for over $375,000 in scholarships with one online application process. The scholarship application window is open through March 1, 2020.

“We are offering several workshops in the next couple weeks to help students get started on their scholarship applications, and guide them through the online scholarship application,” said Dr. Joshua W. Myers, executive director of The Foundation at MCCC. “The scholarship system really streamlines the process for students—they complete one application, which only has 20 questions, and then the student is automatically matched to each the scholarships for which they qualify.” Future students and current students will need to have their MCCC student email and student ID number to create a login to the application system, which they will receive after completing the college’s Application for Admission that is available at www.monroeccc.edu/apply.

Three sessions will be held in Room Z-289 in the La-Z-Boy Center, Main Campus in Monroe on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. and Monday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. One session will be held at the Whitman Center in Temperance on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. in Room W-5. The final session will be held in the Career Technology Center on the Main Campus in Room T-154 at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

The workshops will provide an overview of the types of scholarships that are available, a demonstration of the scholarship application system, tips for responding to questions and preparing their essay, and an opportunity for students to log in and start their application. “We understand that the scholarship process can sometimes be daunting, especially for a student attending college for the first time. We want them to be successful and secure as much financial assistance as possible. That’s why we offer these free workshops,” added Myers.

Nearly 200 scholarships were awarded last year with awards ranging from $500 to scholarships that cover all tuition and fees for two years at MCCC. Not all scholarships are need-based or require high grade point averages or full-time status. Many are program specific, and offered in traditional and technical career training programs. “We strongly encourage students to also complete the FAFSA form (www.fafsa.gov) as soon as they can, along with applying for scholarships from MCCC.” said Dr. Valerie Culler, director of financial aid for MCCC. “While scholarships can help relieve some of the financial burden of a college education, there are other opportunities, too, such as federal and state grants, scholarships from the college and other organizations, work study and loans.” More information about financial aid at MCCC can be found at www.monroeccc.edu/type-of-financial-aid.
