Monroe County Community College will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his contributions to racial justice and equality with Diversity Week events from Jan 21-24.
Diversity Week is sponsored by the MCCC Diversity Committee. All events are free and open to the public. They will take place at MCCC’s Main Campus on 1555 S. Raisinville Rd. in Monroe, with the exception of a peace march, which will start at the Monroe County History Museum.
The college will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
On Tuesday, Jan. 21, MCCC President Dr. Kojo A. Quartey will present, “MLK and Civil Rights, Then and Now” from 3-4 p.m. in the Audrey M. Warrick Student Services and Administration Building, Room 173b.
On Wednesday, January 22, a Unity Peace March will be held. Those interested in marching are invited to assemble for the march at noon inside the Monroe County History Museum, 126 S. Monroe St., Monroe. The marchers will walk through downtown across the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Pedestrian Bridge to the King Monument in St. Mary’s Park.
On Thursday, Jan. 23, MCCC President Dr. Kojo A. Quartey will present “MLK Beyond America” (created by Derek Roberts, associate professor of sociology) from 10-11 a.m. in the Audrey M. Warrick Student Services Administration Building, Room 173b.
On Friday, Jan. 24, MCCC will show a documentary film about King from noon-1 p.m. in the Little Theater, which is located in Room 3 in the lower level of the Campbell Learning Resources Center.
Throughout January, MCCC is hosting donation stations for non-perishable food and toiletries for the Monroe County Opportunity Program at each building on campus.
