The college will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18, 2021, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  One local opportunity for reflection on Dr. King's legacy is a prayer service being offered by the IHM Sisters of Mercy in Monroe, “Building the Beloved Community.” This event will be hosted on Vimeo Livestream at 9:30 a.m. and can be accessed at

On Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021, a Unity Peace March will be held.  Those interested in marching are invited to assemble for the march at noon at the south side of the MLK Pedestrian Bridge. The marchers will cross the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Pedestrian Bridge to the King Monument in St. Mary’s Park. Public parking is available on the north side of Front Street, next to the Knights of Columbus hall, in Monroe.

On Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, “Conversations about Peace” featuring representatives from the IHM Sisters of Mercy, the Monroe Rotary Club and others will be hosted by MCCC via Zoom. The presentation will begin at 11 a.m. and can be accessed at Meeting ID: 947 9677 0191, Passcode: 867772.

On Friday, Jan. 22, 2021, at 11 a.m. Dr. Quartey will host a Zoom event including a video about influencers of Dr. King followed by a discussion of the video. The event can be accessed at Meeting ID: 985 5092 6369, Passcode: 686220.

Also, during the month of January, the Community Outreach Committee at MCCC is encouraging staff, faculty, students and the community to participate in two activities benefitting frontliners and senior citizens.

Monetary donations to be used to create “Frontliner Care Packages” will be accepted through Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021, at the Cashier Office in the Administration Building on the MCCC main campus on Raisinville Road. The care packages will be distributed during MCCC Diversity Week to local agencies that are helping frontliners and their families deal with the stress of the pandemic on a daily basis.

Through the “Send a SMILE to a Senior” effort the MCCC COC is encouraging staff, faculty, students and the community to consider mailing a warm note, card, or have children draw, paint, color a picture to send to a senior living in a nursing facility. Most, if not all of facilities have been closed to visitors during this pandemic. To help participants, the committee has provided a list of the area facilities accepting the “Send a SMILE to a Senior” messages.
