FIVE MONROE AND WAYNE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOLS COMPETE IN WELDING SKILLS COMPETITON AT MCCC

Recently teams from Airport High School (Carleton, MI), Bedford High School (Bedford Township, MI), Flat Rock High School (Flat Rock, MI), Monroe High School (Monroe, MI), and Woodhaven High School (Woodhaven, MI) competed in a welding skills event at Monroe County Community College. 

The competition was created to reward excellence in welding skills of students enrolled in high school level welding programs and encourage pursuit of developing even more skills through higher education technical programs like those offered at MCCC. 

The top three winners in each category were recognized with prizes and certificates, including: 

Combined Process Welding is a joining process of two sheets by heat and pressure created by two conductive electrodes, at least one of the plates has one or more bulging portions.

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is a fusion welding process, which uses an electrical arc as the source of energy that causes the metal fusion to occur.

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) is a type of welding responsible for securing some of the world’s most important equipment and machinery.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) coalescence of metals is produced by heat from an electric arc maintained between the tip of a consumable electrode and the surface of the base material in the joint being welded.

A total of 17 students participated. Coaches/instructors for the high school teams are Chase Dowler (Airport), Don Replogle (Bedford), Terrance Wegiekna (Flat Rock), Glenn Zorn (Monroe) and Richard Pietron (Woodhaven).
