Monroe County Community College will host an open house for prospective electrical students on Thursday, June 8, 2023 from 5:30-6:30 pm in Founders Hall 185 on the college's Main Campus, 1555 S. Raisinville Road, Monroe, MI.
The Southeast Michigan Construction Academy, in partnership with MCCC, is once again offering a Level 1 electrical course that will run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, August 29 - December 14, 2023, from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. During the Open House on June 8, participants will learn about the program, meet instructors, learn how to become an electrical apprentice, and be able to ask questions to assist you in choosing an exciting and rewarding career as a journeyman electrician. Upon successful completion of the Level 1 electrical course, students can enroll in Level 2 of SEMCA’s four-level training program. SEMCA’s four-level training program follows industry recognized curriculum of the National Center for Construction Education & Research. The course begins with basic construction safety in residential, commercial and industrial construction. All students will receive instruction in operating hand and power tools. They will be introduced to electrical theory and the rules and regulations that govern the trade through the National Electrical Code. In addition, students will learn the basics of electrical circuits, conduit bending and residential electrical service. The course trainers will address career paths in the electrical industry including apprenticeship requirements. Throughout the Level 1 course, students will spend time in the classroom, as well as a mocked shop space to perform hands-on tasks. Successful completion of this course will result in an NCCER credential and an OSHA 10 certification.
One of the recent participants in the MCCC/SEMCA electrical apprentice program, Gabe Roberts, represented the region at a national competition in March after winning the Craft Championship competition last December. While Roberts, a year three electrical apprentice at the time of the competition, did not win at the national level, he was honored to represent the region and the MCCC/SEMCA program during the intense competition against other three-year and four-year apprentices in which they were given blueprints for a complex electrical project to be completed in a specified, limited amount of time.
The Southeast Michigan Construction Academy meets all the required standards of the NCCER nationally standardized program (https://www.nccer.org/). Upon completing the program, students and the earned credential will be listed on the NCCER national registry. The stackable credential can be easily transferred among accredited sponsors throughout the industry, allowing students to continue training with other NCCER participants.
NCCER is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) education foundation created in 1996. It was developed with the support of more than 125 construction CEOs and various associations and academic leaders who united to revolutionize training for the construction industry. Sharing the common goal of developing a safe and productive workforce, these companies created a standardized training and credentialing program for the industry. This progressive program has evolved into curricula for more than 60 craft areas and a complete series of more than 70 assessments offered in over 4,000 NCCER-accredited training and assessment locations across the United States. NCCER develops standardized construction and maintenance curricula and assessments with portable credentials. These credentials are tracked through NCCER’s National Registry which allows organizations and companies to track the qualifications of their craft professionals and/or check the qualifications of possible new hires. The National Registry also assists craft professionals by maintaining their records in a secure database.
