Workshop graphic permits to inspectionsMonroe County Community College’s Construction Management Technology program, in partnership with the City of Monroe and the Home Builders Association of Monroe County, will host a workshop detailing the importance of code compliance in ensuring the safety and durability of residential structures.

The workshop, “Building with Confidence: From Permits to Inspections,” will be held on Dec. 13 at 5 p.m. in MCCC’s Career Technology Center, Room 154.

It is free and open to the public.

According to Dr. Emrah Kazan, associate professor of construction management technology at MCCC, a number of groups would benefit from attending the workshop, such as construction professionals; students who are interested in or actively studying construction management, architecture, engineering or related fields; current and future homeowners; representatives from local government agencies responsible for enforcing building codes and regulations; members of industry-related organizations and associations who are interested in supporting and promoting best practices in the construction industry, and faculty and staff from educational institutions with construction-related programs who may be interested in enhancing their curriculum or collaborating with industry partners.

Participants will learn how the Residential Building Code holds vital importance, as it not only sets the stage for regulatory guidelines but also underscores the critical significance of code compliance, Kazan said. Ensuring adherence to building codes is paramount to safeguarding the safety and wellbeing of occupants in residential buildings and provides a foundation for creating secure and sustainable structures while maintaining uniformity in construction practices.

By participating in this workshop, attendees will be better equipped to navigate the intricacies of code compliance, mitigate risks, and avoid legal issues, property damage and costly rectifications while contributing to the overall quality of residential construction, he said.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to network with industry leaders and gain insights into construction practices.

“The construction industry is the backbone of any community and is responsible for shaping the places we call home,” Kazan said. “Ensuring that these structures are safe, durable and compliant by following relevant codes is a shared responsibility.”

MCCC offers an associate of applied science degree with specialization in construction management technology that is designed to provide individuals with a sound background for rewarding careers in the construction industry. The program is structured to provide training in both the technical and business components of this industry. Technical courses examine the materials, processes and systems used in construction. The business courses teach basic business practices and computer skills. Although this program is a two-year occupational program designed to prepare students for employment, four-year colleges and universities may accept much of the curriculum in transfer. Construction management students who wish to pursue the 3+1 transfer program to Eastern Michigan University or the 2+2 transfer program to Wayne State University are advised to meet with a program faculty member for alternate course selections before registering for classes.
