REGISTRATION FOR SUMMER SEMESTER UNDERWAY; CLASSES START MAY 8, 2023 GUEST STUDENTS HOME FOR THE SUMMER CAN SAVE MONEY & TIME PURSUING THEIR COLLEGE GOALS

Summer Semester at Monroe County Community College starts Monday, May 8, 2023. Registration is currently underway.

The semester runs through early- to mid-July. There is a wide selection of in-person, online and hybrid classes are available. Summer Semester classes are shorter sessions than 15-week sessions typically offered in Fall or Winter semesters  – most Summer Semester classes are just 8 weeks.

"Summer classes offer many advantages," said Gerald McCarty, dean of student services. "They are short and concise, offer smaller class sizes that allow more one-on-one time with the instructor, allow students to catch up from previous reduced course loads and bring students closer to graduation."

Summer classes also allow students to take more difficult classes because they can focus their energy on fewer classes to achieve a higher grade, he said, adding that research shows that students who take summer classes are more likely to graduate, and most graduate sooner with less college debt.

Summer classes can be especially beneficial for Guest Students -- those who attend college or university elsewhere most of the year but are home for the summer or another extended period of time. "We make it very easy for Guest Students to register for classes at MCCC," said Katie Novack, director of enrollment management. "They simply have to complete the online application, which can be found at www.monroeccc.edu and select 'APPLY' in the top right corner. If the course(s) a student is interested in taking have a prerequisite, they just send us an unofficial transcript to admissions@monroeccc.edu. We will get them connected to an admissions staff member and get them registered for their classes within a day or two."

"This summer we are offering an increased number of courses that are part of the Michigan Transfer Agreement that allows Guest Students to easily transfer the credits from MCCC back to their home college at the end of the semester," she added. Courses in key areas such as English, math, biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, psychology, sociology and other humanities subjects are being offered. Courses being offered can be found at www.monroeccc.edu/registration under the Summer Semester 2023 menu. A list of the MTA transferable courses offered at MCCC can be found on the Transfer page (www.monroeccc.edu/transfer) and selecting Michigan Transfer Agreement.

"Guest students likely will find they can save several thousand dollars taking classes at MCCC where our tuition for this summer semester is only  $119.75 per billable contact hour for in-district ($212.75 for out-of-district), as compared to $600 - $900 or more per credit hour at most of the state's public universities," Navock added.

Admissions staff are available to assist new students with enrolling and current students with the scheduling process. Please call (734) 384-4104 for more information or email admissions@monroeccc.edu
