Monroe County Community College and ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital will host an open house for the college's Sterile Processing Technician course on Wednesday, February 7, at 4 p.m. Attendees can register for the open house by calling 734-384-4127 or emailing bkinsey@monroeccc.edu. Participants in the open house will meet in the Board Room at ProMedica Monroe, which is located on the first floor of the facility at 718 N Macomb St, Monroe, MI 48162.
MCCC's Sterile Processing Technician course is a noncredit, 12-week medical career training track that awards continuing education units upon completion and is designed to prepare students to function as sterile processing professionals in multiple healthcare settings.
Sterile processing technicians perform and participate in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment.
The open house will include a presentation on sterile processing technology, an outline of the curriculum for the course, information on employer expectations and employee salaries, a tour of ProMedica Monroe's Sterile Processing Technology Lab, information on the upcoming fall offering of the course and an overview of tuition assistance for eligible students.
The next Sterile Processing Technician training course will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 - 9 p.m. beginning March 12 - June 18, 2024. Clinical hours will be at facilities located in Southeast Michigan or Northwest Ohio, generally within one-hour drive time from Monroe. To enroll in the course, students should have or be pursuing a high school diploma or equivalency. The cost for the course is $1,955. For those who enroll by February 11, 2024, an installment plan program. In addition, the Sterile Processing Technician program at MCCC is an eligible program for both the Michigan Achievements Skills Scholarship (https://www.michigan.gov/mistudentaid/programs/michigan-achievement-scholarship/career-training) for those who graduated from high school or earned a GED in 2023 and the The Michigan Reconnect Short-Term Training initiative www.michigan.gov/reconnect/short-term-training-program) for those high school graduates and GED holders who are21 and older and have not previously earned a college degree.
Presenters for the Sterile Processing Technician course include Krista Lambrix, Director - 2 South Inpatient Surgery, Ambulatory Surgery & Post Anesthesia Care Units, ProMedica Monroe; Melanie Leath, instructor of MCCC's Sterile Processing Technician course, and Stacey Goans, director, Michigan Works! Monroe American Job Center.
“There is a local need for sterile processing technicians, and successful completers can expect to earn a starting hourly wage between $16 and $20 per hour or more,” said Barry Kinsey, director of workforce development at MCCC. “Most of the students who have attended previous training sessions are actively employed in the field. This is a great opportunity for student to train and begin a career in healthcare.”
Students who complete this comprehensive course with a passing grade of 70 or higher will be prepared to sit for the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician Certification Exam.
