EMT PROGRAM NOW OFFERED IN THE EVENING AT MCCC's BEDFORD LOCATION

TEMPERANCE, Mich. – Students who enroll in Monroe County Community College's Emergency Medical Technician program now have the option of completing the entire program in the evening at the college's Bedford location.

The program, which is housed at MCCC's Whitman Center in Temperance and is now in its second year, requires that students complete four courses -- two in Fall Semester and two in Winter Semester. All of those courses can now be completed from 6-10 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

"Previously, classes were only offered from 7:30-9 a.m. Monday through Friday to accommodate the schedules of area high school students who 'dual enroll', which means they participate in the program while still working toward their high school diploma," said EMT program director Shawn McBride.

"This was not very convenient for adults who work or have other commitments during the daytime. We wanted to accommodate such individuals who want to pursue a career in this critical health care field. There is a high-demand for skilled EMTs, and we want to make this program accessible to as many prospective students as possible."

MCCC's program is designed to prepare students to provide competent care for patients in emergency situations, McBride said. EMTs provide out-of-hospital emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services system.

The four courses in MCCC's EMT program include learning in the classroom, laboratory and clinical environments, he said. The first two provide the foundation and first set of required skills, such as airway management with oxygen therapy. The third course presents medical scenarios commonly encountered in pre-hospital settings and shows students how to assess and treat common emergency calls. This third course is also where clinicals begin. The final course exposes students to injuries associated with traumatic events and completes clinical rotations.

Courses must be completed in sequence or as co-requisites, with a grade of "B" (80 percent) or higher, with deviations requiring approval from the instructor and division dean. There are also clinical pre-requisites, including obtaining immunizations, maintaining active CPR certification, consent to background and security checks, and more.

After successful completion of the Fall and Winter semesters, students are eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician’s (NREMT) exam and become licensed EMTs with the state of Michigan or Ohio.
