DUNDEE, Mich. – Through the new Roof Family Dundee Promise Scholarship, every graduating senior from the Dundee High School class of 2025 who enrolls full-time at MCCC and completes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will automatically receive a $2,000 scholarship from The Foundation at MCCC, Dr. Joshua W. Myers, executive director of The Foundation at MCCC and donor Donald Roof announced last week to Dundee seniors during a ceremony at DHS.
This scholarship is in addition to the Community College Guarantee, which provides tuition-and fee-free college at MCCC, Myers said, and the scholarship funds may help with academic expenses, such as books, computer or course materials not covered by the CCG. Students may also use the funds to address basic needs security, such as food, gas or rent. The scholarship is not based on academic performance or financial need. Students are eligible to qualify for this scholarship up until the beginning of the Fall 2025 Semester start. Enrollment for the Fall Semester is underway.
“The Roof Family Dundee Promise scholarship amplifies the impact of the Community College Guarantee,” Myers said. “Tuition-and-fee-free community college now puts an education within reach for all Michigan students; however, students still struggle with basic needs. This generous scholarship will help students overcome barriers that might otherwise prevent them from successfully completing their education at MCCC.”

“[My wife] Pat and I began dating when we were students at Dundee High School, and we now want to give back to the community where our life began together,” said Don Roof. “We are focused on eliminating poverty, and one of the best ways we know to do that is to help students improve their lifetime earning potential with a degree. It is our intent to incentivize more graduates from Dundee to attend MCCC in the future. It’s our plan to continue supporting this scholarship, and we hope it will convince more and more Dundee graduates each year to choose MCCC.”
The Roofs were named Monroe County Community College Supporters of the Year in 2021. They married after graduation and then moved to Eastern Michigan University, where Mr. Roof earned a degree. The couple then lived in Dundee and raised three daughters. Roof worked in executive positions in finance and accounting and management. He was chief executive officer for several NYSE companies.
The Roofs learned about the programs and training MCCC offered in applied science and engineering technology and, in 2014, began contributing to The Foundation at MCCC. Since 2015, many students have received the Roof Family Foundation Scholarships. During COVID, the Roofs contributed additional funds to MCCC’s Project Persist initiative that provides emergency aid.
Myers said that students with an associate’s degree earn nearly $8,000 more in median income per year than students with a high school diploma, according to the American Association of Community Colleges. According to a study from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, “the net lifetime earnings gains are $495,000 for an associate’s degree.”
