MCCC OFFERING FOUR FAST-TRACK CAREER TRAINING PROGRAMS THAT ARE MICHIGAN ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP-ELIGIBLE

Monroe County Community College's Office of Workforce Development is offering four fast-track, noncredit career training programs this fall that are Michigan Achievement Scholarship-eligible.

Individuals who graduated from high school in 2023 or after may qualify to receive up to $4,000 -- $2,000 per year -- toward these eligible programs.

MCCC's eligible programs include Pharmacy Technician, Sterile Processing Technician, Dental Assisting and Clinical Medical Assistant.

To qualify for the Michigan Achievement Skills Scholarship, a students must:

  • Be a Michigan resident for at least the immediately preceding year
  • Have graduated from high school in Michigan with a diploma or a certificate of completion or achieved a high school equivalency certificate in 2023 or after
  • Have not yet earned an associate or bachelor’s degree
  • Have not yet earned a degree, certificate, or other credential with this scholarship

The Pharmacy Technician Program begins Sept. 29 and ends Dec.10. Tuition is $2,399. This comprehensive course will prepare learners to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Content includes pharmacy medical terminology, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining generic and brand name drugs and much, much more. This program will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to pursue certification, including the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam.

The Sterile Processing Technician Program begins Sept. 9 and ends Dec. 16. Tuition is $1,995. Sterile processing technicians perform and participate in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment. Students who complete this comprehensive course with a passing grade of 70 or higher would be prepared to sit for the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association’s Certified Registered Central Service Technician exam.

The Dental Assisting Program begins Oct. 6 and ends Dec.16. Tuition is $1.199. The program prepares learners for entry-level positions as a chair-side dental assistant. It covers the history of dentistry, introduction to the dental office, the legal aspects of dentistry, introduction to oral anatomy, dental operatory, introduction to tooth structure (primary and permanent teeth), the oral cavity and other areas. The purpose of this program is to familiarize learners with all areas of administrative and clinical dental assisting, focusing on the responsibilities required to function as an assistant in a dental practice.

The Clinical Medical Assistant Program begins Sept. 9 and ends Jan. 27, 2026. Tuition is $2,399. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle. Students will review important topics, including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology (including proper lead placements), professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant national exam.

  • Be sure to give the provider of the career training program proof of your high school diploma, certificate or completion or equivalent

MCCC is also offering the popular Boiler and Power Plant Fundamentals Program, which begins Sept. 9 and ends Dec. 18; however, this program is not eligible for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship. Tuition is $1,099. Students who successfully complete this course will be qualified to seek employment in facilities using boilers in any energy conversion process. Topics covered include power plant theory, equipment and procedures; basic understanding of the ASME code, and various theories and systems relevant to the industry. In order to enroll in this course, students must complete the Accuplacer placement test and obtain a minimum score of 71 in English, 65 in Reading and 54 in Elementary Algebra. Text is included in the cost. Online registration is not available for this class as test scores must be verified prior to enrolling. The college's Veterinary Assistant Program, also not Michigan Achievement-eligible, starts Oct.30 and ends Jan. 8, 2026. Tuition is $1,899. Students will learn about the care of animals as well as how to recognize signs of illness and disease. The program also covers interpersonal communication, interaction with clients and their animals, as well as how to assist the veterinarian during examinations. Administrative duties, such as fee collection, banking and accounts payable are also emphasized to provide the student with the skills necessary to maintain an efficient front office.
