Statement from MCCC on Inaccurate Facebook Post by Laura Perry, a Candidate Running for State Representative in Michigan

Statement from MCCC Vice President of Instruction Dr. Grace Yackee on a recent inaccurate Facebook post by Laura Perry, a candidate running for state representative in Michigan:

"Laura Perry, a candidate running for state representative in Michigan, inaccurately posted to her Facebook page that MCCC’s Children’s Literature course is a pre-requisite for the college’s Early Childhood Education Program. Perry also inaccurately inferred in that post that, because of the class, the college is not in line with National Association for the Education of Young Children’s accreditation standards. The course is neither a prerequisite for the ECE Program nor a required course to complete a degree in Early Childhood Education at MCCC. Some of our transfer university partners do require it and accept it at the least as an elective in their education programs. MCCC recently underwent a complete Early Childhood Education Program accreditation review, and zero concerns were raised regarding that particular course and its alignment with accreditation standards. MCCC is an institution of higher education that is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

"The college develops and delivers curriculum that is consistent with its mission, vision, core values and educational goals. Students are encouraged to discuss concerns regarding course outcomes, objectives, assignments, and discussions directly with faculty. If, after discussing with faculty the student continues to have concerns, they should reach out to the respective division dean. All complaints are investigated."
