STATEMENT FROM MCCC PRESIDENT DR. KOJO A. QUARTEY ON MAINTENANCE AND IMPROVEMENT MILLAGE RENEWAL DEFEAT

MONROE, Mich. -- Monroe County Community College's proposal for a renewal of its current 5-year Maintenance and Improvement Millage failed to pass yesterday.

Below is a statement from President Dr. Kojo A. Quartey on the millage renewal defeat:

"While the millage renewal did not pass, we remain deeply grateful to the people of Monroe County for their continued support of Monroe County Community College and the students we serve. This outcome does not diminish the value our community places on education. I believe the failure of this renewal simply reflects the very real economic pressures many families are facing today. We understand that times are difficult, and we respect the voices of our neighbors who are doing their best to balance personal needs with public priorities.

"MCCC will continue to live within the means provided by voters, stewarding every resource with care, creativity, and transparency. However, the unfortunate reality is that the failure of the millage renewal will limit our ability to respond swiftly to the evolving needs of our students, our workforce and our region. Resources that allowed us to expand academic offerings, enhance student services and invest in safer, more modern facilities over the past 10 years must now be redirected to preserve and maintain existing infrastructure.

"Still, our mission remains unchanged. We will press forward with determination, guided by the same spirit of service and innovation that has defined MCCC for over six decades. We are confident that the people of Monroe County continue to believe in the transformative power of education, and we remain committed to earning their trust and confidence, every single day."
