MONROE, Mich. -- Monroe County Community College has received the 2026 Excellence in Mental Health and Well-Being Award from Insight Into Academia magazine.
The award is a measure of an institution’s individual programs and initiatives that significantly advance core values of student and employee mental health and well-being through programs, initiatives and other campus priorities deserving of this national recognition.

MCCC was featured, along with 37 other recipients, in the September 2026 issue of Insight Into Academia magazine, the leader in advancing best practices in higher education excellence. Through print and online articles, the company shares advice, valuable resources, in-depth profiles of top programs at colleges and universities, headline news and more.
"This award is a testament to the value MCCC places on mental health," said Gerald McCarty, dean of student services. "Our partnership with Monroe Community Mental Health Authority has brought on campus a mental health counselor who is available four times a week and many resources, including mental health screenings, referrals, crisis prevention and therapy,” McCarty stated.
Insight Into Academia magazine selected MCCC because of the colleges deep care for its community, according to Dr. Scott Behrens, vice president of enrollment management and student success.
“In our fast-paced and often overwhelming world, the work of a mental health counselor is nothing short of heroic,” Behrens said. “This is an institution with an unwavering commitment to people. Beyond pure academics, support of a person’s welfare is a way we can strengthen the community, and this award speaks to how seriously we take our service to others."
“We know that institutions are not always recognized for their dedication to and prioritizing mental health and well-being services and support for their students and employees,” said Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of Insight Into Academia magazine. “We are proud to honor the colleges and universities who are standouts as the need for these resources continues to grow substantially.”
A call for nominations for this award was announced in March 2026.
