The Foundation at Monroe County Community College has awarded the LaVerne B. Norton Scholarship to Virginia Cox and Zachary Fredenburg. Each $2,200 Winter 2026 scholarship is to be used for tuition, books, and fees.
Cox, of Monroe, earned her GED in 2018. She is studying business management at MCCC. She volunteers with Oaks of Righteousness in community service projects that support individuals working toward stability, healing and personal growth. She is the daughter of Virginia Adkins and the mother of Alaina Cox, Jax Deese and Ruxin Vansickle.
Fredenburg, of Temperance, is a 2013 graduate of Blissfield High School. He is currently studying nursing at MCCC. He is the spouse to Ashley Talkington and father to Wrenley Fredenburg.
To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must maintain part-time enrollment status of six credit hours or more, demonstrate financial need and/or be a student with academic promise. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Monroe County and are single parents or students raised in a single-parent household.
