The Foundation at Monroe County Community College has awarded the LaVerne B. Norton Scholarship to Starr Anteau, Jennifer Bartley, Jenna Bowling, Sharon Caudill Castellanos, Virginia Cox, Mason Diaz, Destiny Gallina, Heather Huffman, Jennifer Johns, JoAnn Mills, Victoria Posey, Emily Rice, Adam Spencer, Kimberly Totzkay and two others. Each $2,100 scholarship is to be used for tuition, books, and fees.
Anteau, of Newport, is a 2020 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, Hamler, OH. She is in the MCCC Momentum Adult Success Program and is completing the MI Transfer Pathway for social work. Anteau wants to obtain a master’s degree in social work, and her dream is to be a licensed clinical social worker. On campus, she is a Writing Fellow. Her late mother was Andrea Bomia, her father is James Anteau, her companion is Eston VanConet and her children are Ezra and Athena.
Bartley, of Temperance, is a 1999 graduate of Mason High School. Bartley is majoring in nursing at MCCC and is a member of the Student Nurses’ Association. She is the daughter of the late Joyce and Willett Fulkerson, the spouse of the late Bruce Bartley and the mother of Perry.
Bowling, of Newport, is a 2018 graduate of Orchard Center High School. She is studying nursing at MCCC. She has been a Certified Nurse Assistant and a pharmacy technician for various years. Bowling is the daughter of Danielle Bowling, and is the mother of Sariah.
Caudill Castellanos, of Carleton, is a 1997 graduate of Western International High School, Detroit, MI. She is studying computer information systems at MCCC. While attending the community college, Caudill Castellanos volunteers as a tutor at her local elementary school and works as a paraprofessional. She is the mother of Manuel, Gustavo and Matilde.
Cox, of Monroe, completed her GED in 2018. She is part of MCCC’s Momentum Adult Success Program and is majoring in business management. Cox wants an expanded education to become a successful entrepreneur in the future. She regularly volunteers at the Oaks of Righteousness. Cox is the daughter of Virginia Adkins, and she has three children.
Diaz, of Newport, completed his GED in 2025. He is majoring in accounting at MCCC and plans to transfer to a university for his bachelor’s degree. His dream is to become a financial analyst. Diaz is the son of Danielle and William Diaz.
Gallina, of Dundee, is a 2017 graduate of Monroe High School. She is completing her prerequisite coursework for the radiography program at MCCC. Gallina was a member of the Agora, MCCC’s student newspaper. She is the daughter of Frank Gallina.
Huffman, of Monroe, is a 2024 graduate of Penn Foster High School. She is majoring in nursing at MCCC. She is enrolled in the LPN program and has plans to bridge to the RN program. Outside of education, Huffman is passionate about volunteering for the Jefferson Jr. Bears. She is the daughter of Christy Huff, the spouse of Kyle Huffman, and the mother of four children: Koltin, Hannah, Kingsley and Haven.
Johns, of Ottawa Lake, is a 1998 graduate of Whiteford High School. She is completing the MI Transfer Pathway for communications. Johns is affiliated with the Children’s Advocacy Network and the AmeriCorps Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She is the daughter of Jill and Michael Farrell, and the mother of Sage and Penelope.
Mills, of Monroe, is a 1988 graduate of Wauseon High School, Wauseon, OH. She is studying fine art at MCCC and is a member of the MCCC Art Club. JoAnn has had her art displayed throughout the state of Ohio and at the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery. She is the mother of Robert and Anthony Hart.
Posey, of Flat Rock, is a 2011 graduate of Smyrna High School located in Tennessee. She is pursuing nursing at MCCC and is a member of the Student Nurses’ Association. Posey is in the RN program and is interested in becoming a midwife. She is an active volunteer at her church, local elementary school and Corewell Health Trenton Hospital. Posey is the spouse of DaVaun Posey, and she is the mother of four children: Izmene, Caraline, Logan and D.J.
Rice, of Monroe, is a 2008 graduate of Dundee High School. She is studying nursing at MCCC. Rice tutors psychology at the Student Success Center and participates in the honors symposium. She is the daughter of Ralph and Tamara Rice, and she is the mother of Rex.
Spencer, of Monroe, is a 2004 homeschool graduate. He is pursuing an accounting degree at MCCC. He is an active student in the classroom and a caring neighbor in his homeowner’s association. He is the son of Dave and Michelle Spencer, the spouse of Britt and the father of Rosalina.
Totzkay, of Monroe, is a 1977 graduate of Trenton High School, Trenton, MI. She is majoring in business management at MCCC. She is a member of the Student Government at MCCC and contributes to various campus initiatives, including Heck’s Market, the Care Closet and the event planning committee. She is the mother of Ryan, and she has two grandchildren, Lily and May.
To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must maintain a part-time enrollment status of six credit hours or more, demonstrate financial need and/or be a student with academic promise. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Monroe County and are single parents or students raised in a single-parent household.
