The Monroe County Community College Community Farm is excited to offer plot space in the community garden to community members to grow their own fresh food this summer after a two-year hiatus.
The plots are located on one acre of the college’s 12-acre parcel of land located just north of the college's main campus (1555 S. Raisinville Road, Monroe) between the MCCC Gerald Welch Health Education Building and the Monroe County Intermediate School District campus.
This year eight plots in the community garden are available. All ages and experience levels of growers are invited to reserve a plot via email amccain@monroeccc.edu or by calling 734-384-4155. Those who are interested will have the choice of a 10-foot by 10-foot plot, or a10-foot by 20-foot plot, depending on availability.
“Plots can be reserved on a 'first-come, first-served' basis," according to Andrew McCain, program coordinator for MCCC's Agriculture Program and the Community Farm. "The MCCC Community Farm is requesting a $10 donation for each plot this year to help offset some of the garden supply costs.” Plot preparation and planting dates will be subject to weather, with the tentative start day to be set in mid-to-late May.
“We encourage growers to bring their own seeds and transplants,” said McCain, “but we also hope to have some extra transplants available on the planting day.”
This summer will be the fifth year that MCCC farm has served the community by growing fresh produce to be given away. The MCCC Community Farm is also in search of volunteers to help maintain the rest of the one-acre community garden area that will be growing a variety of fresh vegetables and flowers, in partnership with the River Raisin Institute and the MCOP (Monroe County Opportunity Program) to offer a bountiful harvest for those in need in the community.
