Get Involved!
Going to college isn’t only about reading, writing papers and studying for exams. MCCC Student Government provides an opportunity for students to have their voice heard around campus. By supporting student organizations and planning exciting campus activities, MCCC Student Government works to create a fun atmosphere that fosters a community feeling among students. To get involved in Student Government, contact Edmund La Clair at elaclair@monroeccc.edu or join the group in Room S-165 on Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m.
MCCC offers a wide range of clubs and organizations you might want to check out.
The most recent Student Government meeting featured students who mentioned that they might be forming new clubs and organizations this fall. Active clubs include but are not limited to:
Agora: The Agora (https://mcccagora.com/) is the college's student-run newspaper. The publication is produced by MCCC students enrolled in the journalism classes under the guidance of a faculty adviser and student editors. Often the recipient of state awards, the Agora reports on college events and other issues of interest to the college community. Students interested in getting involved with the Agora should contact Matthew Bird-Meyer at (734) 384-4288.
Agricultural Club: The Agricultural Club is coming back for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. Contact Kristen Brown at kbrown@monroeccc.edu for more information.
Art Club: The mission of the Art Club at MCCC is to enrich the student body and community through art expression and art education. You do not need to be a student of art to be involved. Contact Therese O’Halloran (tohalloran@monroeccc.edu) for more information.
Care Closet: The Care Closet was developed just a few years ago as the college recognized that not all students have the resources they need. The aim of this group is to provide support and accessible resource such as clothes, hygiene products and school supplies to MCCC students and the community. To learn more, contact Amanda Althouse (aalthouse@monroeccc.edu).
Christ-Centered Community: The Christ-Centered Community is one of the college's newest clubs and was created by students to create a loving, Christ-centered community that is active on the college campus. The club meets Monday afternoons 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the La-Z-Boy Center Atrium. Contact Tim Curry (tscurry@monroeccc.edu) for more information, or just show up. All are welcome.
Criminal Justice. The Criminal Justice club is one of the newer clubs on campus and is advised by the founder of the Criminal Justice Program, Dan Wood (danielwood@monroeccc.edu). The club meets on the second and fourth Thursdays each month and will soon be planning field trips and public service events. This is one of the fastest-growing programs on campus.
Drama Club: The purpose of the Drama Club is to identify and unify students who enjoy theater arts and provide outlets for further exploration and involvement in many creative and definitive branches from classical to modern. This includes stimulating and fostering a greater understanding and zealous attitude towards arts advocacy and networking. This semester, the Drama Club is sponsoring the play “The Three Musketeers.” Auditions are October 21 and 22 in the Holladay Theater at 7 p.m.
Gender & Sexuality Alliance: The Gender and Sexuality Alliance is probably the college's most active club, providing a strong, supportive community on campus to increase tolerance and to provide resources to LGBTQIA+ students and those wishing to learn more about LGBTQIA+ issues and culture. The club's main goal is to break down the barriers of stereotypes and misconceptions of the LGBTQIA+ community. The club is open to all open-minded students and community members, including straight allies, and holds events all year long on campus. To learn more, contact Melissa Grey (mgrey@monroeccc.edu) or Jenna Bazzell (jbazzell@monroeccc.edu). The Gender & Sexuality Alliance meets every other Thursday in S-165.
Intramural Sports Club: The Intramural Sports Club was developed just a few years ago to enrich campus life and the academic experience by providing both competitive and recreational opportunities. Involvement in this club is open to all. Simply contact President Kojo Quartey (kquartey@monroeccc.edu) to learn more.
Math and Science Society: The Math and Science Society returned in rebranded fashion just a year ago under the direction of Hans Lechner (hlechner@monroeccc.edu). MASS provides the college's STEM-inclined students a place of support and research exploration.
Multicultural Student Association: The Multicultural Student Association is one of the college's newer clubs. It strives to cultivate a vibrant, inclusive community on campus that fosters cultural awareness, acceptance and appreciation while seeking to celebrate and embrace our differences while promoting dialogue and understanding among diverse cultures and experiences. To learn more about the Multicultural Student Association, contact Selina Griswold (sgriswold@monroeccc.edu).
Phi Theta Kappa: MCCC's Phi Theta Kappa chapter was chartered on January 14, 1969 with four members. Since that time, more than 2,000 MCCC students have become members of PTK. Every eligible student should be involved in this organization. Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for two-year colleges. Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is by invitation to all students who achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 and have earned at least 12 semester hours at MCCC. Designated scholarships for members totaling $36 million are offered by about 600 four-year colleges and universities. To get involved, contact Edmund La Clair at elaclair@monroeccc.edu.
Psychology Interest Group: The Psychology Interest Group provides an empowering community in which students interested in psychology may enhance their leadership, educational and/or career pursuits together; to expand member’s knowledge of the functions and workings of fields in psychology; to provide resources to any member who needs assistance in the area of psychology study or career growth; to provide experience that enriches the study outside the classroom; to provide non-academic and/or community based opportunities to engage in the applications of psychology, and to promote an increase interests in psychology on campus. The Psychology Interest Group meets every other Thursday in L-142. For more information, contact Patrick Wise (pwise@monroeccc.edu) or Melissa Grey (mgrey@monroeccc.edu).
Respiratory Therapy: All students who have been accepted to the Respiratory Therapy Program should be involved in one of the two Respiratory Therapy clubs. To learn more, contact Angela Prush (aprush@monroeccc.edu) or Kayla Ford (kford@monroeccc.edu).
Student Library Advisory Club: The mission of the Student Library Advisory Club is to promote library programs, reading and information literacy to MCCC students and to enrich lives in the community through library events such as a Student Book Club. SLAC aims to include student voices and decisions about the library’s events and collection. To get involved with SLAC contact Elizabeth Hartig (ehartig@monroeccc.edu).
Student Nursing Association: The Student Nusring Association is open to all students who have been admitted into the Nursing Program. For more information, contact Dawn Lymond (dlymond@monroeccc.edu).

And the Enriching Lives Award Goes to: Peggy Jacob

Peggy Jacob, a professional counselor in the Office of Admissions and Guidance, is the recipient of the Fall 2025 Enriching Lives Award. Dr. Grace Yackee presented her with the award at the Board of Trustees meeting Sept. 22.
The award recognizes employees based on their commitment and example(s) of how they incorporate MCCC’s Mission, Vision and Values into their daily work.
One nominator wrote of Peggy: "Peggy Jacob is a true asset to MCCC. As a professional counselor, she goes above and beyond to help students at all levels -- new, current, undecided, dual, at-risk students be successful. In her work, she puts students first and embraces the mission of MCCC by being STUDENT FOCUSED."

The next SLAC meeting is Oct. 8 at 12:30 p.m. in the Library Conference Room. SLAC is reading The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery this semester and will host a book discussion on Nov. 12 at 12:30 p.m. in the Library Conference Room. Work Where You Learn
MCCC students are hired for many positions at the college, including many that provide experience applicable to specific fields of study. These jobs are part-time with a maximum of 20 hours per week. It is the commitment of the college that the candidate is a student first and an employee second; therefore, a student’s class schedule is reviewed and work hours are scheduled accordingly. To be eligible, students must be enrolled for at least six credit hours during the Fall and Winter semesters of employment. To review and apply for student assistant positions, a candidate must register with the Office of Workforce Development at collegecentral.com/monroeccc; fill out the Student Assistant application (https://www.monroeccc.edu/sites/default/files/academics/StudentAssistant-JobApp.pdf) and e-mail it to workforce@monroeccc.edu or drop it off at the Office of Workforce Development in Room Z-286.
